Paris, Texas sweater

I have started working on a new sweater inspired by Nastassja Kinski red sweater in the movie Paris, Texas. I chose GGH Soft Kid in a beautiful smokey grey. I will post progress pictures and the pattern when I am finished. For now here are some pics from a really great movie.

I remember my mom working out to this video when I was a little girl. I was trying to describe it to my friend the other day but there is no way you can put this into words. I can't believe I found it on youtube. It is so amazing. Look at the visual effects, the sitar, the driving disco beat and the great leotards. Plus the chicks are actually sweaty. I mean you know this video works. I still have the VHS tape and I think I am going to get my ass in shape.

This is my new favorite summer song to walk around the city to. It will keep you going all night and all day.

I always wondered who the beautiful woman was in Man Ray photos. I recently put a name to the face. I had always heard of Lee Miller, the photographer, but did not realize how amazing her life was. Her life as a young fashion model began one day while she was crossing the street in New York and Conde Nast stopped her from getting hit by a car. She was an immediate success, getting the cover of Vogue in 1927. She then moved to Paris in the 20's, with the full intention to understudy with Man Ray. He was reluctant at first, but she soon became his assistant, lover, pupil, and muse. Lots of photos during this period are credited to Man Ray, but were actually taken by Miller. She was a part of the surrealist movement of the time and rediscovered the photo process of Solarization. She moved back to New York in the 30's to start her own photo studio and met her first husband, an Eygptian railroad man. They moved to Cairo, where she studied light and space, taking beautiful photos of the pyriamids. She soon grew bored with the desert and moved back to Paris. Then World War II began. She became a war correspondat and took some of the most memorable photos of the war. She is pictured here bathing in Hitler's tube.She took this photo of a mayor's daughter who had poisoned herself at the arrival of the Allies in Germany. All of these pictures are copyrighted.

This is a tv commercial circa. 1994. John was one of my bestest friends in Junior High. One day in English class John decide to write a letter, the one that the Snapple Lady reads in the commercial. So they called John and flew him out to Arizona mascot training school for classes. Then they filmed the commercial in our junior high. He even got to be in the Macy's day parade in New York on the Snapple float. JOHN is WAY COOL. I still have his autograph on a pink lemonade wrapper.

I am noticing more and more that I have a real problem with the english language. How the fuck did i graduate elementary school. Am I dyslexic? why did no one ever catch it? next time you see me tell me your phone number and i swear i will get it wrong. or ask me to punctuate a sentence, spell a word, or try and get me to pronounce a name or say something in french.
i feel like such an idiot. i need schooling. will someone tutor me? i mean seriously.

Here is my first published knitting design. I am so excited and hopefully will have time to do more in the future. It's on stands now in the best knitting magazine there is, Vogue Knitting Spring/Summer 08. I think I might actually wear this one, usually the things I knit end up in a storage bin.

Tap Dancing

Today I had a meeting with the Crochet girls at work and we were talking shop when I noticed this weird pair of tap shoes hidden under one of the girls desk. Of course I asked her if she was a tap dancer. "No," she said "I tried but couldn't get the hang of it". Then all of a sudden the other girl was like "I used to take lessons". She put those ugly things on and went to town on the plastic mat that her office chair normally rolls around on. It was hilarious. She even tried to booty dance with them on and I thought she gonna slip and bust. We laughed our asses off.
They looked a little like this. She even posted them on Craig's List but nobody wanted the lonely pair.

So of course it made me think of my friend, Jamie, from Tilly and the Wall. Here is a clip from their recent show at the Knitting Factory in New York. There were so many young teens in the audience singing along and taking pictures. Jamie did a kick ass tap solo in the middle of the set.

Seeing my friends play made me feel so nostalgic especially when they played Nights of the Living Dead. I had so much fun in high school with my friends, going to the docks, midnight garage sales, 40 ounces. It's great to see them enjoying their lives and doing what they love.

Tamara de Lempicka 1889(Warsaw, Poland) - 1980 (Cuernavaca, Mexico)

I want a biography like this woman and I want to paint like this woman. She has always been one of my favorite's. Known as "soft cubism", her portraits have an overpowering sense of seduction and desire. Her style is clean , precise and sensual. She live during my favorite time period and traveled all over the world. She was a bohemian artist in the Roaring 20's in Paris and then lived in L.A. during the 30's and worked with movie stars, famous painters, and writers. She has a great story and I encourage you to read more about her. I couldn't blog about it because it would go on forever. I had a hard enough time as it is getting this down. Damn it.

I got Spunky in 1987. As you can tell I was very young and she was just a little kitten about 2 weeks old. I lived with her my entire life except for a few months here and there. It's is a long time to spend with anything.
I brought her up to New York with me in a rental truck and it was a long ride. She was a trooper. I think she was happy here in our little apartment. Tonight I miss her very much. The house seems empty and cold. It was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do, but she had a spoiled life. RIP 2/28/08

I am making a baby blanket for a new addition to our family. It is made out of Blue Sky Alpaca Organic Cotton in the color Bone. This yarn is very soft and does pill a little but is perfect to use for baby gifts. It is washable and knits on a worsted gauge. I picked a pattern from the Debbie Bliss book Simply Baby. I choose the pattern because I like traditional heirloom gifts when it comes to newborns. The cables are classic with a modern look using the garter stitch to cross over the stockinette stitch. I will post finished pictures when I am done. Looking at all of the cute things in this book makes me want to start a line of baby knits. or have a baby.

If I could be in any band ever this would be the one. the Pandoras are the band I wish I was in since I was a teenage girl. They were from L.A. in the 80's and were on BOMP! records. This was recorded at Irving PLaza 10/12/1984.

I find myself attracted to a specific breed of designers and as I research them I find that they are what you would call lifestyle designers. You know like Ralph Lauren he has clothes, shoes, home, whatever you can think of buying he wants to design it.

For example my first post was about BIBA. She definitely wins this contest. She epitomizes that ideal. The designers I am talking about completely surround themselves with their own aesthetic. Their own vision surrounds them. I really dig that. It's not easy to do. There is something so amazing about having that much fire inside you.
So I am going to start a series of all of my favorite "lifestyle" designers and to start it off is Josef Hoffman. He was an Austrian architect and interior designer, but really he moved us from Art Nouveau into Modernism. I am drawn to the way he used black and white patterning in his design very similar to Japanese Op art. These sparing details create amazing architectural details in his rooms. His color choice is so modern and his decoration and ornamentation is sparing but thoughtful. He designed buildings, furniture, glassware, textiles, and Modernism.

The December 2007 cover of Vogue Italia. When I saw this cover at the news stand the other day I couldn't help myself. I have never seen a fashion spread like this. Even the Vogue lettering is patterned. It is like they threw out all the rules when designing this one.

As I was posting these images I realized that they looked familiar like a futuristic version of art nouveau. It looks like Mucha. The positioning of the models, the fluid lines, the liquid florals. I am not a fan usually of the rockabilly tatoos or the betty page hair or the over exaggerated liquid eyeliner. I like that era but in a classical Dior way black and white not the modern Trash and Vaudeville type. But I must say here it works. It is probably one of the most psychedelic fashion shoots I have ever seen. Whoever found these textiles and thought of using the nude nylons to break up everything deserves what they are paying them.

As I looked through the story, I longed for the whole magazine to be these images through and through, page after page.

This is the future.

On that note I also think the Monks were way ahead of their time.

I love the Monks and so should you. Check out all of their videos on youtube. The were service men stationed in Germany in the 60's and decided to start a band. What cool dudes

Biba

In 1964, Barbara Hulanicki founded a ready to wear line that was affordable for working girls. She began with a simple idea, a relatively inexpensive design that was accessible to the public by mail order. Her first store was opened in Kensington, England. The first day they opened they sold every dress in the shop. The Biba-girl was born long skinny legs and babydoll dresses big eyes and want to revolt against the establishment. They began to venture into the lifestyle market creating a brand that featured clothes, wallpaper, paint, furniture, and textiles. The Biba-girl was born. The use of dark "Auntie colors" made the line cohesive and reflected the London city streets.

The ultimate realization of the company came when they opened Big Biba. They bought an old Art Deco department store and filled it with everything Biba. There was a rooftop garden which was home to exotic animals like pink flamingos. There was an entire floor called the Casbah which you can only imagine how beautiful that must have been. They had a Biba food hall where they even had there own brand of baked beans. The infamous Rainbow Room on the top floor of their store that served as a resturant/concert hall with pink marble floors and black china. They would throw huge dress up parties and bands like The New York Dolls to Liberace performed there. Biba was a place where regulars and rock stars could rub elbows.

The thing I love most about Biba is her amazing ability to mix art nouveau, ancient Egypt, a little Sarah Bernhardt, and 60's mod culture. The mix is so over the top, so bad that it 's perfect.
